MINELAB SAFARI : Minelab Safari is the newer version of the Minelab Quattro. Summing it up with my own opinions, Minelab Safari is quite a misunderstood creature. There is one basic concept to be known in Minelab Safari operation. The true Minelab Safari user is an audio only user. The Safari is kind of like having an E-TRAC or Explorer SE without a display. This is not exactly a bad thing, as many deep coin seeking, successful E-TRAC users tend to hunt by audio alone, totally ignoring the display.
There are two main complaints from failing Minelab Safari users, likely proving they made the wrong choice in metal detectors. The visual display ID and depth gauge are not accurate enough for the coin cherry picker, that relies more on ID numbers than audio. If you are going to get a Safari, you should be an audio dominant style of metal detector user. Meaning more of a relic hunter than a coin shooter. The Safari user has the same "silver tones" as you would expect from an Explorer / E-TRAC, without all the "hey guys I have a 12:46 on the display that sounds like it might be silver".
Let us also consider this: The original Minelab Explorer silver coin shooters were audio only operators. The display numbers on the original Explorer model were not accurate either. This trained the original Minelab Explorer users to be masters of the audio trade. The Minelab E-TRAC's display ID numbers are extremely accurate on very deep coins, but, the audio dominant Explorer or Safari user is getting the same story. The E-TRAC's main advantage is the ferrous ID, which can save one from digging rusty nails that sound like deep coins. Since this is a reasonably rare occurrence in the big picture of detecting, the Safari user could easily get on as well as an E-TRAC user, if they are dedicated in learning the audio. Technically, they would be better off than an ID screen dominant E-TRAC user, that waits only for perfect signals.
Audio dominant metal detector users go deeper on average, as they are more in tune to the subtle nuances of deep targets.
Here is a good way to sum it up. Imagine if the E-TRAC had an audio learning mode, where the screen displayed cheesy coin icons instead if target ID numbers. This would force one in to being an audio insight dominant user. That's the Minelab Safari.
